Garvoc runner Virginia Moloney did just that on Sunday, with swarms of athletics fans flocking to watch her compete in the Commonwealth Games’ women’s marathon at the Emmanuel Centre.
Moloney’s run aligned with a Warrnambool Athletics Club meeting which featured both junior and senior runners in the Emmanuel College complex.
Warrnambool Athletics Club secretary Tracey Van Rooy said Moloney’s Commonwealth Games presence had boosted the profile of running in the south-west.
“We’ve had a fantastic turnout with a lot of people here. It’s great to promote running,” she said.
“With Virginia being a local girl, everyone takes a bit more of an interest.
“Everyone has a little more pride when they’re watching. It’s fantastic.”
Moloney was one of two south-west athletes to compete in the athletics class, with Kathryn Mitchell taking home gold in javelin.
