SECRETARIES across Warrnambool enthusiastically embraced a day struck in their honour. International Secretary Day was held to honour people in that role around the world. The Standard article about the day claimed secretaries as the “unsung heroines.”

TERTIARY education took on a new identity in Warrnambool with the renaming of the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education to Deakin University.
SEAWEED was being looked at as a way to create employment opportunities. Warrnambool Skillshare was looking at the possibility of employing people to help in the collection and processing of seaweed for conversion into garden fertiliser.
MEMBER for Warrnambool John McGrath called for public discussion on the issue of pedestrian crossings in the city. McGrath said pedestrians were forced to rely on the goodwill of drivers if they had to make the hazardous journey from one side of the road to the other.
SPORT
FORMER Camperdown forward Ken Hinkley made his debut for VFL club Geelong. Hinkley had previously played 11 games for Fitzroy during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. His debut for the Cats came against North Melbourne at the MCG. The Cats lost the game by two points with their best player being former Warrnambool centreman Paul Couch.
IT was another career highlight for former Warrnambool, South Warrnambool and Fitzroy wingman Alan Thompson when he was appointed coach of the Victorian Country Football League under 19 team.
SIX Warrnambool swimmers took part in the Victorian Public Schools Sports Association swimming titles. The swimmers were Emma Goodall, Jasmine Watson, Kelly McMillan, Emma Kavanagh, Andrew Woithe and Andrew Page.
SOUTH Warrnambool was forced to take on Mortlake in the opening game of the Hampden league season without their captain-coach Noel Mugavin. The Roosters leader did not recover in time from a hamstring injury. On a positive note, the Roosters named West Australian recruit Phil Bradmore for his first game for the club.
ENTERTAINMENT
GENE Hackman and Willem Dafoe were the stars of the film Mississippi Burning which was the blockbuster on screen at the Warrnambool Capitol Cinema.
The Marriage of Figaro opera was on at the Warrnambool performing Arts Centre, as was the Siberian Cossacks live dancing show.
BOXING champion Jeff Fenech was the star attraction at a number of Warrnambool pubs. The Lady Bay, the Cally and the Western hotels were all showing Fenech’s latest fight on big screens.
TOP of the singles charts was The Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics.
