Utility Mitch Couch, who was lauded as best-on-ground in Nirranda’s drought-breaking 2016 premiership, has returned after a season with Central Highlands outfit Springbank.
With several top-calibre midfielders joining Nirranda in the off-season, co-coach Shane Threlfall expected Couch to perform several roles.
“The great thing about Mitch is that he’s able to play whatever role you give to him,” Threlfall said.
“His best-on-ground grand final effort was off half-back. We know he can play down back, we know he can run through midfield and we know he’s a great lead-up forward.
“He’s very much a team-orientated player and he’s a real asset for us.”
Threlfall revealed Nirranda had hit its off-season recruiting targets.
The Blues have also added Ethan Dalton (Griffith Moorooka), Luke Irving (Merrivale), Ben Threlfall (Warrnambool), Brady Kew (Panmure), Isaac Templeton (Koroit) and Aaron Searle to their ranks.
“You set out to retain your current list, and you do your best to add to what you already have in the meantime,” he said.
“We’ve been training since before Christmas, but then obviously had a bit of a break and we’ve been back since mid-January.
“The boys have been embracing some extra sessions run by (Isaac Templeton) which has been great.”
