Adrian John Stevens, 21, of Lachlan Street, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to making a threat to kill, causing criminal damage, assault with a weapon and unlawful assault.
He was placed on a 12-month community corrections order with the conditions he be supervised and do programs as requested.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan said it was important for Stevens to get support so he did not offend in a similar way.
Stevens said people were always damaging his possessions but he recognised he couldn't lash out like he had.
Police said that at 7.30pm on October 19 last year a neighbour asked Stevens for a cigarette, but he didn't have one.
The neighbour also complained that Stevens played his music loudly.
The neighbour then went and got a can of petrol which he launched through a window of Stevens' home.
Stevens went to the neighbour's home, yelled for him to come outside so he could kill him and then kicked the front door off its hinges with about six kicks.
Stevens was armed at the time with a large kitchen knife and the neighbour sheltered behind his partner.
Stevens then went home and rang the police.
He was arrested last Saturday after failing to appear in court when required.
Last weekend he rang police about his car being damaged.
Police found there was a warrant out for his arrest and he was taken into custody.
Defence counsel jack Rabl said his client had reacted in the wrong way.
