CFA, police and paramedics were called to the fire on Saturday at 11:48am on the Koroit-Port Fairy Road.
Koroit CFA captain Leigh Mugavin said the hay on the trailer of the truck was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
He said the once safe, the hay was taken off the tray and spread onto the ground to help with putting it out.
He said no one was injured and there had been some minor damage to the truck.
Police said hay combustion was the cause of the fire.
Mr Mugavin said crews from Koroit, Woodford, Warrong, Framlingham, Purnim, Woolsthorpe and Warrnambool attended the incident and would stay until the fire was completely out.
“We apologise to the community for the smoke but it’s something we can’t control,” he said.
“We’ll stay here and get it all cleaned up.”
According to the Victorian emergency website, residents should keep the road clear to allow emergency services to respond and smoke would continue to be visible across Koroit.
