UPDATE, Friday, 8am: The 44-year-old woman who drowned at Killarney on Thursday was from Kirkstall.
Police believe there are no suspicious circumstances.
Thursday, 7pm: A 44-year-old woman has drowned at a Killarney beach despite frantic efforts to revive her.
Port Fairy police Senior Constable Greg Creek said the woman was swimming with her partner when they both got into trouble about 5.25pm.
The partner and another man brought the woman to shore where bystanders administered CPR.
“A number of people assisted including an off duty nurse,” he said.
He said despite CPR being administered for an extensive period of time, she was unable to be revived.
Senior Constable Creek said the pair was caught in a rip.
He said the woman was local.
Ambulance officers, including two mica paramedics, police, Port Fairy SES and CFA were involved in the operation.
EARLIER: Paramedics and emergency services are responding to an incident at a Killarney beach.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were on scene and assessing a person.
“It’s not really clear what is happening at this stage,” she said.
It is understood a person was pulled from the water about 5.30pm.
