Already, 391 children have registered.
Nippers coordinator Nicole Dwyer said this number is up from 368 last year and is expected to grow.
“The numbers are from Port Fairy and around the district,” Mrs Dwyer said.
“We have a lot of kids from Koroit as well as from farms up around Hamilton.
“There will be another spike in numbers when the summer holiday visitors come to town, we usually get about 50 more from that.
“We have mixed it up a bit this year, most sessions are on Sunday but we have also introduced three Friday twilight sessions.
“This clears the weekend for families if they want to go away. The program has 15 sessions so it is a big commitment from everyone. We need about 75 volunteers to help supervise.”
Senior members of the club have started weekend patrols at East Beach, which will continue until Easter. From Boxing Day, paid life guards will patrol the beach from Monday through to Saturday morning. This will continue until the end of January.
