While working in his family bakery Mason enjoyed the weekly lunchtime visits by a group of people with disability and was inspired to apply for a role with St Laurence as a personal support worker.
While working in this role Mason commenced studying a Certificate IV in Disability with genU Training. genU brings together the best of two trusted and respected organisations, Karingal and St Laurence.
Undertaking this night course allowed Mason to further develop his skills and knowledge and develop connections with others working in the sector. Gaining this qualification has allowed Mason to progress his career, with a recent appointment as a senior disability practitioner with genU Kable, where he works with clients creating day program plans and encouraging participation in recreational activities.
Mason enjoys working alongside clients of a similar age, bringing a calm and positive focus with his naturally encouraging style. He says working in the disability sector is not only traditional care work. “I can take my own interests and share them with people who want to participate in the community. I really enjoy bringing fresh ideas and a fresh look to a person’s day.” Mason encourages other young people to consider a career supporting others, describing his role as fun, exciting and rewarding.
