Officers were patrolling routes to the races in an effort to minimise traffic incidents after six people died en route in 2011 after a collision north of Penshurst.
But, a Colac male put himself, and his father, in a very awkward position on Saturday.
The young Colac man and his 10 friends, piled into an 11-seater bus, with his father driving.
Clearly there were 12 people in the bus but only 11 seats, with an Esky in the aisle providing the temporary 12th seat.
Even more problems arose when the youth decided to hang out of a side window and fling a stubbie at a road sign while the bus was being followed by police officers.
The stubbie tossing youth received two infringement notices - for failing to wear a seat belt and littering.
Three of his mates in the bus also received tickets for not wearing seat belts and the driver got a fine for carrying the additional passenger.
The 12th passenger was taken by police back to the Penshurst hotel so that the bus could legally continue it’s journey.
It’s understood the 12th man did eventually reach the races and his day wasn’t a total waste, but it was an expensive trip all-round.
