The Heather Holcombe Memorial Melbourne Cup Luncheon raised $9500 for the palliative care unit, while the Friends of Moyneyana celebrations at the Port Fairy Bowls Club raised $3000.
Friends of Moyneyana’s Margaret Whitehead said about 100 people attended and they had a good day. Prizes were awarded to Hillary Hamilton (Lady of the Day), Betty Pearson (runner up) and Janine Becker (best hat).
“We raised $2600 and we were presented with a cheque from Moyneyana House staff of $400 from a function they held,” Mrs Whitehead said.
Mrs Whitehead said the event’s future looked promising with some local groups in talks to take it over, after the aging committee announced this year’s lunch would be its last.
The Heather Holcombe memorial lunch organiser Julie Holcombe said it was pleased with the total raised, considering numbers were lower than previous years.
She thanked the public for its generosity and Damian and Sue Gleeson from the Star of the West in helping to make it a great day.
She said 56 people attended, which was down on usual numbers of about 100 people.
Mrs Holcombe said it was looking for ideas on how to refresh the event, while also staying true to its origins.
“It’s about Heather being a social butterfly and dressing up for cup day so it has significance,” she said.
“We’ve been going since 2001 and we’re asking for feedback what people would like us to do in the future. It’s too good of a cause to let it go which is why we’re asking people what they would like to see.”
