The works, to be conducted at the southern end of Liebig Street, between Timor and Merri streets, are expected to be completed by December.
Wannon Water project manager Murray Dancey said Norfolk pine tree roots had damaged the aging infrastructure and a new main would be installed.
“A full replacement further from the pines is the best option allowing us to provide high quality services to our customers for the next 80 years,” Mr Dancey said.
He said local contractors Cri-Tech Plumbing would conduct the works which were timed ahead of the busy summer period to avoid peak traffic periods.
“We acknowledge the city renewal works that are currently taking place further along Liebig Street and have scheduled this project in conjunction with Warrnambool City Council to ensure it is completed prior to Christmas.”
He said construction would predominantly occur within the road pavement on the western side of Liebig Street.
Traffic interruptions will occur in the north-bound lane with detours in place. Electronic signs will advise motorists of any traffic changes.
Mr Dancey said property owners had been advised of the works and some would experience a reduction in water pressure during the project. “These pressures will return to normal once the works are completed.”
