Flash flooding across Warrnambool

UPDATE: 10pm

Two residents are spending Wednesday night in emergency accommodation after more than 15mm of rain fell on Warrnambool in an hour.

A team of 16 Warrnambool SES members responded to about 15 requests for help in Allansford, north and east Warrnambool during a 90-minute period at the height of the downpour between 5pm and 6pm. Most related to drainage systems struggling to cope with the deluge.

SES crew leader Peter King said residents from two households required emergency accommodation for the night because water had run through their homes.

The weather bureau recorded 15.2mm of rain between 5.08pm and 6.08pm at Warrnambool airport with 27mm falling from 9am to 10pm.

EARLIER: Heavy rains are causing havoc across Warrnambool with police and SES units responding to flash flooding.

Police are warning people to avoid the area around Wanstead Street, Glenrowe Avenue, Fleetwood Court, Clovelly Court and Wooles Avenue in East Warrnambool, with those roads being shut down.

People are also being asked to avoid King Street, Breton Street and Queens Road near the school crossing.

Warrnambool was hit with 10.6mm of rain in 22 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, weather bureau figures show.
