Warrnambool fire brigade senior station officer David Ferguson said the alarm was raised at 9.50pm Saturday when the feeder power line east of Deakin University into a small switch yard came down.
"It was still alive and started a fire. Traffic was stopped on the east-bound lane. The fire ignited tall standing grass but size of the fire was not significant," he said.
"We worked around the power line to extinguish the blaze, which took about 30 minutes, and Powercor officers arrived to deal with the power.
“We had about 20 staff and volunteers from Allansford and Warrnambool turn out."
Mr Ferguson said said he understood that electricity supply to homes in Allansford and east Warrnambool was interrupted.
