When the Horsham drover married the shire president’s daughter in September 20, 1947, the only hiccup they faced was a blown tyre on the wedding car.
This was a union that began after Hartley Ball finished a sheep droving trek from Horsham when he walked right past Sarah Drake’s family home in Childers Cove.
The rugged 18-year-old had left his home during 1944 to travel south for water sources during the drought.
“She must’ve thought I was a good-looking bloke,” Mr Ball said.
Mrs Ball thinks it was more likely to have been the novelty. “It was the first time I’d seen anyone driving sheep along the road I guess.”
