Hamilton police stop driver of stolen vehicle

The owner of a stolen car is relieved after police intercepted the vehicle metres away from where it was taken on Saturday morning.

Hamilton police Sergeant Paul Stanhope said the car was reported as stolen at 2.15am on Saturday from a home in Bree Road in Hamilton.

Sergeant Stanhope said police knew the car was stolen and pulled the 25-year-old driver over at 5.50am in Kent Road as part of a routine check.

Sergeant Stanhope said the owner of the car and the accused were known to each other and the driver co-operated with police.

The man was charged with drink driving, driving while disqualified, theft of a motor vehicle and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
