Detective Senior Constable Jarrod Anderson, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said anyone who had seen anyone unusual, different or suspicious in the south Portland area last week should contact police.
He said four homes - two on Monday last week, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday - were burgled.
"All four homes were unoccupied at the time and the offences were committed between 9am and 3pm," he said.
"We also received a report that a resident answered the door and found someone who had no business being there on their front door step.
"The offender could well be knocking on doors to find out if there is anyone home and then breaking in," he said.
Detective Senior Constable Anderson said electronics, cash and jewellery had been stolen.
Anyone with information is requested to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
