He was 67.
Allin, who worked at The Age for 25 years after starting his cadetship in 1969, was editor of The Standard for two years from 1988.
In 1994 he worked as the head of the Victoria Police Media Unit before taking on a public affairs role for Deakin University.
He is survived by his wife Dallas, daughters Jess and Jacqui and grand-daughters Layla and Maya.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
