The Magpies, who play Hamilton Kangaroos and Warrnambool in the final two rounds, ground out a tough victory over Portland at Leura Oval on Saturday.
Bain enjoyed a return to goalkicking form, slotting six goals in the 14.11 (95) to 12.9 (81) win.
“It was a really ugly win,” he said.
“It wasn’t the best game we’ve played but a win is a win.
“We wasted a few shots at goal and made a few clumsy errors.”
Bain praised Cam Spence, Riley Arnold and Sam Cunnington for their contributions.
The Magpies had one minor injury scare out of the match.
“Charlie Fry got a mild concussion in the second quarter,” Bain said.
“He was all right after the game.”
