The Blues were thoroughly tested by Terang Mortlake at D.C. Farran Oval on Saturday, particularly throughout a tough, physical first half.
The teams were tied on 11-all at quarter-time, and the Blues were able to edge in front by two goals at the main break.
But it was in the third term that the visitors started to build a bit of momentum, pushing out to a five-goal advantage and finishing with a 10-goal quarter to win 41-34.
“We were really flat and we were really lacking energy,” Cust said. “We had some really good patches and then we just had some terrible lulls.
“You’ve just got to go for the win. You’re never going to play 100 per cent every game, you’ve just got to take that. We want to be playing our best in finals, so if we’re not 100 per cent now, as long as we get over the line, that’s the main thing.”
