Almost 90 south-west youth have participated in Alternative to Schoolies since 2010 and there are places available for the November trip.
Each year, local students travel to the Philippines and volunteer at Indangan in the Buhangine District region, where they volunteer. During this time a school and boarding facility have been built.
This year’s group will complete the third and final stage of the boarding facility, with an aim to complete the building and fit out the inside of the structure.
Moyne Shire youth development officer Geraldine Edar-Ralph leads the project and said the experience had a transformative effect on both the teens and the communities they helped.
She said there were also plans to furnish the facility so students could use the building as a base for their schooling by the end of this year.
Ms Edar-Ralph is seeking donations to complete the project. Individuals can donate towards items they wish to purchase such as bunk beds, kitchen items or other equipment. To donate or for more information about the trip contact Geraldine on 0427 827 475.
