Hamilton police Sergeant Dave Walkley said the four men and one woman in their early 20s left the Mount Abrupt car park at 3pm on Monday.
He said that at 5.45pm a member of the group contacted emergency services to report they were lost and the light was fading.
"Police members and and SES volunteers attended and the air wing was notified," Sergeant Walkley said.
"The walkers were located at 8.25pm and walked out by SES volunteers. The visitors were lost after getting off the track."
Sergeant Walkley said most of the main walks in The Grampians and around Dunkeld had information signs in place to say how long walks would take to complete.
"We suggest walkers look at those signs, leave in plenty of time, make sure they can complete the walks before darkness, stick to the tracks and be well equipped with food, water and the appropriate clothing," he said.
