Sobey, who guided the Warrnambool Seahawks to a drought-breaking Big V title in 2016, is currently trailing with American NBA outfits.
He rose to prominence through a stellar season with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League over the summer and is one of the nation’s most in-form prospects.
Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis said Sobey formed part of a new-look training squad.
“There is a good mix of experienced Boomers campaigners and players getting their Boomers opportunity for the first time,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together and watching this group develop.”
The 20-man training squad will be sliced to just 12 in coming days, but Sobey remains in contention with Australia’s NBA contingent unavailable.
Sobey will be joined by Adelaide teammates Mitch Creek and Matt Hodgson.
