The 12-year-old, from Port Fairy, won the poem written by a competitor section on Monday, with his work titled The Dog For Me.
Classmate Lily Godde received an honorable mention for her piece Loss.
Principal Sue Paulka said the school was off to an excellent start and 36 students would compete at the event during the next fortnight.
“We enter every year – it gives children an opportunity to practise their public speaking skills and work on their reading and expression,” Ms Paulka said.
She said children in years three to six chose to participate and it helped to develop their confidence and self esteem.
