JOCKEYS battled it out over the 19 fences in the Brierly Steeplechase in heavy going on day one of the May Racing Carnival on Tuesday.
They shared their thoughts on their respective runs after the 3450-metre race.
It is worth noting the comments of King Of The Forest jockey Jarrod Lynch and Mannertone hoop Braidon Small leading into Thursday’s Grand Annual Steeplechase.
They were they only two runners from the Brierly that will back up in the annual.
2nd: Now and Zen ($7.50)
John Allen: It was a super run. I've got no excuses I thought I had Zed Em when we turned for home but he was just too strong.
Now And Zen should be really competitive in some of the other steeplechase features later in the year.
3rd: King Of The Forest ($91)
Jarrod Lynch: I just let him find his feet. He took me into the race very strongly.
I was never going to win because the first two were too brilliant but my bloke went through the lines strongly. He put in a super trial for the Grand Annual on Thursday.
He's a lot more seasoned this year.
4th: Mannertone ($41)
Braidon Small: He attacked the line strongly. It was a classy field.
I was happy how he finished the race off going into the Grand Annual. I would say looking forward to the Annual he's going to be a nice ride.
5th: Western Kingdom ($4.80)
Jamie Mott: Great effort for his first run in a steeplechase.
He jumped well and looks to have a bright future.
6th: Gold Medals ($3.90)
Shane Jackson: I thought he went good for his first go over fences.
I think he'll make the grade.
7th: Nishiazabu ($31)
Paul Hamblin: I lost what chance I had in the middle stages of the race.
8th: About The Journey ($14)
Martin Kelly: He ran a blinder. It was a good field and he went well.
9th: Dormello Mo ($13)
Tom Ryan: He just seemed to struggle.
10th: Universal Sound ($201)
Richard Cully: He was just outclassed.
