At about 12.30pm the width of cloud stretched for kilometres in a clear distinctive line, separated and defined from the blue sky.
Acting supervising meteorologist Steven McGibbony said the formation “looked like the edge of an extensive bank of mid-level cloud”.
“There's nothing particularly unusual about it, but probably looks rather impressive from the perspective of where the photo (on Raglan Parade) was taken near the edge of the cloud which allows it to be seen stretching across the horizon,” he said.
It come ahead of a weather warning for the south-west with widespread rain with isolated thunderstorms expected to develop across most districts on Monday night.
A low pressure trough over South Australia will move across northern Victoria on Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is likely to develop in the region on Tuesday.
Up to 40 millimetres are expected and could exceed 60mm possible in areas associated with thunderstorm activity. These areas include Warrnambool, Horsham, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Traralgon.
