Leishman managed a surprise eagle on hole 16 to take the lead from Americans Kevin Kisner and Charley Hoffman.
He parred the remaining two holes and shared an emotional embrace with his children and wife Audrey upon securing the feat.
“It’s obviously a really special week,” he told NBC television after the feat.
“Mr Palmer was an awesome guy who I was lucky enough to meet a few times at this event so to honour him is huge. Another reason why it is so special is that this is the first time I’ve won a tournament with my family here.
“To have Audrey and the boys here to run out on to the green … Matty (Kelly), my caddy, his family is here as well. It just all came together.
“It’s just an unbelievable day.”
Leishman finished the tournament at -11, which came on the back of scores of 66 and 69 in the second and fourth rounds.
