Elderly targeted in new water safety campaign

South-west residents are this week being urged to remain safe around all bodies of water ahead of the swimming season.

This year’s Victorian Drowning Report highlighted an alarming increase in incidences involving the elderly with a 40 per cent spike in fatalities.

Despite the rise, children under four years still contributed to the highest rate of both fatal and non-fatal drowning incidents.

A new water safety campaign announced this week will target older people and next year another will target small children, aiming to increase awareness and prevent further death in the state.
