On Sunday the rap-rockers took out the regional finals in Torquay, having earnt a spot in the showdown by winning the Warrnambool heat.
Runk, which features members from Warrnambool, Garvoc, Terang and Lismore, were also runners-up in the Moyne and Corangamite heats.
Tom Bruckner (guitar), Harry Johnson (bass), Matt Murray (drums) and Jacob Pugh (vocals) formed the band while doing the VET music course at Emmanuel College. Johnson is also a member of metal band Against Our Pride, who won this year’s Freeza Push Start state final.
Next year’s final will be held in Melbourne as part of the Moomba festival.
Pugh said the quality of bands at the regional final was high and Runk had not expected to win.
As for the state final, he said Johnson’s key take-away from Against Our Pride’s win was the judge’s seemed to be looking for a band with a unique sound.
“We’ll just do our best to put on a strong show,” Pugh said.
Runk are playing in the Foot In The Door competition at the Queenscliff Music Festival this weekend and next month will play at Ballarat’s Karova Lounge and a Kool Skools event in Melbourne.
