Mr Tehan clearly stated that following a plebiscite on the issue, he would vote in Federal Parliament based on the outcome of the poll.
Mr Tehan said he personally still supported the traditional definition of marriage being between a man and a woman, however, he said he would respect a decision made by the majority of the population.
He also said efforts to protect religious freedom would need to be introduced if same sex marriage was legalised.
“I understand why there’s an interest to what people will do, but there’s a little bit more to the issue than just a yes or no to a plebiscite,” Mr Tehan said.
