Hamilton police Sergeant Rex Habel said a Branxholme officer saw the light coloured VR or VS Holden Commodore sedan at about 8.45pm on Friday and checked the vehicle travelling at 170km/h in the 100 zone between Branxholme and Hamilton.
The officers activated his vehicle’s emergency lights and siren but the speeding driver refused to stop and the officer alerted other police in the district.
Soon after Hamilton police sighted the vehicle near Hamilton's South Boundary Road and recorded it travelling at 165km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Police again activated their emergency lights but the driver again failed to pull over.
Due to a ban on police pursuits, officers were unable to chase the vehicle.
Officers were also unable to obtain the vehicle's registration plate number due to rain and poor visibility at the time.
Sergeant Habel said it was high-end dangerous speeding.
"Travelling at those speeds on wet roads at night is highly dangerous to all road users, it's at the extreme end in term of the dangerous speeding category," he said.
"Anyone with information about the identity of the driver or the registration of the vehicle is strongly urged to contact Hamilton police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
