Touring Warrnambool on Friday afternoon, the state leader told reporters the latest Ipsos-Fairfax poll would not detract from advocating his agenda during the next fortnight.
The opinion poll published on Friday showed Labor sitting on 56 per cent to the Coalition's 44 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. Dr Napthine still led Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews as preferred premier.
"We'll be working hard between now and the 29th of November to make sure people have a genuine understanding of the choice they face," Dr Napthine said.
"I think this'll be a tough, tight, close election and I think every vote will count in every seat."
At the 2010 state election, then premier John Brumby led opposition leader Ted Baillieu in opinion polling for more than six months prior to the November poll. Several polls during election week highlighted a marked shift with Mr Baillieu trumping Mr Brumby for the first time. The Coalition subsequently formed government.
Dr Napthine said voters were only properly assessing the field as the election drew closer.
"A choice about who they trust to manage the economy; who they trust to grow jobs and opportunities in Victoria; who they trust to deliver a better Victoria," the Premier said.
"I believe the choice is very clear. The Coalition have a track record in all those areas and the track record of the Labor Party is desal, Myki and their union mates."
Dr Napthine's visit was the first by an incumbent premier to the south-west during a state election campaign since his predecessor Jeff Kennett hit the hustings in the Warrnambool electorate at the 1999 poll.
