Dr Napthine has promised that illuminated speed zones worth about $25,000 in total would be installed on both sides of the Commercial Road school crossing.
“Commercial Road is very busy with many large trucks, cars and tourist vehicles travelling through Koroit, particularly with the Murray Goulburn factory next to the school,” he said.
“These signs flash when school-zone restrictions are in place and have proven to be very effective in slowing down motorists and improving safety.”
Samuel Sutcliffe met Dr Napthine in August after collecting more than 500 signatures calling for the signs because of concerns about the safety of Koroit Primary School pupils and the crossing supervisor.
The grade 6 pupil said there had been a number of near-misses at the site.
“I have listened to Samuel’s concerns and I am proud to announce a re-elected Coalition government will install two solar-powered flashing speed zone signs on Commercial Road outside Koroit Primary School to increase safety,” Dr Napthine said.
School crossing supervisor Susan Hand told The Standard in August she had witnessed some near-misses at the crossing which she described as scary.
“We have a lot of visitors and it’s not immediately obvious that it’s a school zone,” she said.
“There’s a lot of trucks that come through.”
