South-west branch president Robyn Archer said the celebrations on Saturday brought together old and new members.
“Our first meeting was on November 5, 1974,” she said.
“We had welcoming drinks for our old members and on display was many of our commemorative embroidery works which celebrate every 10 years of the branch.”
A new three-panelled celebratory screen was unveiled, to mark the 40-year milestone.
“Each member made a small piece of embroidery which was made into a tile and then the screen,” Mrs Archer said.
“There was enormous variety and techniques on the tiles. It was very beautiful.”
Fifty tiles from members made up the screen, which will be displayed at special events and at the branch’s exhibition in February.
The Roaring Forties exhibition at the Masonic Hall will include new pieces from members and a display of 1940s embroidery and clothing.
The first branch president Susannah Evans enjoyed the celebrations and Lorraine Blackmore, who called the first meeting of the branch, also attended.
