During a visit to the facility the South West Coast MP promised the upgrade, which would replace the existing kitchen built in the 1950s.
In a speech to Heywood constituents, the Premier said the upgrade was needed because the existing kitchen was cramped and located away from the main hospital building.
Staff presently have to trolley food to the central hospital site.
“It’s a kitchen that’s certainly been worked hard with over 200 meals a day produced by the kitchen for both inpatients and Meals on Wheels,” the South West Coast MP said.
“If the Coalition government is re-elected on the 29th of November ... we will provide $1.6 million to Heywood Rural Health to re-located the kitchen, to expand the size of the kitchen and completely refit and modernise the kitchen.”
The new kitchen would cover 175 squares and include two large coolrooms and a commercial-size freezer, two ovens, grill, fryer, dishwasher, large food preparation area, additional work benches and large rangehood.
Heywood hospital has 50 operational beds, including five for acute patients, 12 for nursing home patients and 33 hostel beds.
