The man was headed east towards Warrnambool in an early model Toyota when he hit an electricity pole, east of Andersons Road, at about 2.30pm.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man sustained head injuries.
"He had a knock to the head and had a laceration. He didn't loose consciousness or anything like that," Mr Mullen said.
"There was a small fire started in grass at the front of the car, after electricity lines sparked on impact. A passer by extinguished the fire and called emergency services."
Mr Mullen said the man was taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police and CFA crews attended and a Powercor crew was also called in to right the pole.
Warrnambool police were also called to a two car crash at the corner of Hopkins Road and Florence Street at about 3.45 Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured.
