More than 500 parents have signed a petition handed to councillors this week asking for flashing safety lights to be installed outside the Koroit District Primary School on Commercial Road. 

The petition, organised by the school’s year 6 pupils, says up to 328 vehicles use the road during certain hours of the day. 

In a letter to councillors, pupil Samuel Sutcliffe said he was concerned for fellow pupils and the school’s crossing attendant. 

“We have many family with children with special needs at my school and I am concerned for their safety,” Samuel said in his letter. 

Commercial Road falls under the responsibility of VicRoads, which is conducting its own investigation into the proposal.

The request will be discussed by councillors tomorrow. 

Meanwhile, councillors will also decide whether to provide $10,000 to the Koroit Football Netball Club to run the Tower Hill Challenge.

The endurance event, scheduled for Saturday, December 6, is expected to attract up to 1000 participants. Organisers estimate up to $30,000 is needed to construct the testing obstacle course. 

Moyne Shire officers are recommending the council support the funding request. 

“This even has potential to attract participants from outside the region which will create an economic spin-off to local tourism and commerce operators,” the report said.
