As one of 20 CFA members chosen in Victoria, Ian Hamley travelled around the state to attend three weekend sessions and completed regular self-study missions.
The Portland Fire Brigade second lieutenant described the Chief Officer’s leadership development program as invigorating, enlightening and completely different to anything he had experienced.
“Reflecting on yourself allows you to acknowledge what you don’t know and to use other resources or people to build your knowledge,” Mr Hamley said.
“It really hammered home the importance of good communication.”
CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson maintains a personal leadership library and asked the participants to read and understand the writings of historical greats such as Sir Ernest Shackleton and Sun Tzu.
