A Curdievale man was among those targeted, saying he received a call from someone purporting to be from the federal government and wanting to send them a $7600 cheque to reimburse the man for “overcharges by banks”.
To receive the cheque, the man would have to pay “a one-off payment” of $99, he was told, and was given a phone number to call — (02) 8006 1416.
When The Standard called the number, the reporter was told they had called the federal government’s department of finance, but the call was promptly ended when the reporter started asking questions.
Subsequent attempts to ring the number were cut off after a couple of rings.
