Daryl and Susie Porter took over as owners of the Whalers last week following six months of negotiations and licensing formalities, Mr Porter said.
He said the Whalers and the Gallery tended to attract different crowds and would continue to do so.
“(The Whalers) will have live bands and we’ll still have DJs at the Gal,” he said.
“The Gallery (seems to be) just for the young ones, whereas (the Whalers) is for probably the 25-30s and onwards.”
Mr Porter said taking over the Whalers was “a good opportunity” due to its location and layout, but he said he was keen to reaffirm its status as a live music venue.
“We want to get some bigger bands in here — take it back to like the Lady Bay days . . . and get some good live bands,” he said.
“We’re sourcing some well-known bands at the moment.”
The Porters took over the Gallery in September 2012.
“The Gal sort of runs by itself so it’s a good opportunity to get the Whalers running to full potential,” Mr Porter said.
“We’ve already changed the menu.”
The Porters’ son and daughter Alister and Sarah will manage the Whalers on behalf of the family.
