Early morning beach goers found the three-metre-long whale, believed to be a pygmy or dwarf sperm whale, on the sand early near the Worm Bay carpark bearing a large number of cuts and bruises.
Staff from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Warrnambool City Council and a local vet worked on the whale. They determined its injuries were too great and decided to euthanise it.
The public has been asked to stay away from the area.
