The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the south-west and elevated parts of the central and north central forecast districts.
The bureau expects damaging winds of about 50 kilometres an hour, with peak gusts of 90 kilometres an hour.
A low pressure system developing over central Bass Strait will bring rain and hail to the region on Friday and Saturday.
Thunderstorms are also possible.
Saturday is expected to be cold, with more rain and hail and tops of only 14 degrees expected across the region.
