Detective Sergeant Dave Renney, of the Colac police crime investigation unit, said the incident happened about 10.45pm on Wednesday outside the victim’s Wilson Street home.
He said a young man had driven home and was making his way inside when there was an “exchange of banter” with a group of half-a-dozen young men aged between 18 and 25 who then attacked him.
The victim’s father was also attacked when he came to his son’s aid, but only realised he was bleeding from several stab wounds after the group fled. The victim’s mother was struck to the jaw with a pot plant when she tried to intervene.
The victim has three deep stab wounds to his lower left leg, several wounds to a shoulder and another to a buttock.
Detective Sergeant Renney said two men had already been interviewed by police and released pending the issuing of summons for assault-related offences.
