Motorists spotted two-metre high flames, pulling to the side of the highway and alerting the unaware owner behind the house.
"I had no idea. I was cooking some lunch. I left the shed and saw the smoke," owner Shane Cowell said.
About five people armed with buckets stopped the flames and embers from spreading to the house and nearby dry paddocks.
Emergency services are yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
Mr Cowell suspected a cigarette butt tossed from a passing car to be the likely culprit.
"It's a filthy habit."
