In a submission to the federal Mobile Coverage Program discussion paper, Glenelg said almost the entire council area was poorly serviced, including the major centres of Portland and Casterton.
“The community is clearly of the view that phone coverage must be addressed to provide a safer environment in the region,” the submission said.
“Although there is mobile coverage at Portland there are still areas of Portland with intermittent service.”
Problems with phone coverage were highlighted during the 2013 Kentbruck and Cashmore fires. Nelson, Merino, the Lower Glenelg National Park and the Cobboboonnee National Park have almost no coverage at all.
