Constable Rachel Wass said there was an increasing number of dogs roaming the streets, especially at night, which had prompted complaints from residents.
“We are working closely with the Moyne Shire Council to tackle this problem,” she said.
“Mortlake police will have a focus on dog owners locking up their pets, particularly at night. We have had five complaints in the past week.
"There are sheep and other animals on blocks in an around Mortlake.”
Constable Wass said dogs found wandering would be reported to the shire and owners prosecuted.
