A GEELONG man will appear in Portland court next Tuesday after being charged with stealing from cars.

Portland police Sergeant Ryan Nelson said the 36-year-old from Hamlyn Heights was arrested at 6.20pm last night after police received information from the public.

It is understood the man has been charged with a number of offences relating to the theft from about six vehicles.

He was bailed to appear in the Portland Magistrates Court next Tuesday, February 4.

Sergeant Nelson said the items allegedly stolen included wet suits, tools and sporting equipment.

"We were delighted that information from the public led to the arrest," he said.
