A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for towns including Port Campbell, Peterborough, Mortlake, Camperdown, Terang, Hamilton and Colac.
Coastal areas including Warrnambool and Portland are not part of the affected area.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should keep clear of fallen power lines, secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home and keep away from creeks and drains.
An update will be issued by the weather bureau at 6pm.
