A WHALE believed to have been sighted off Pickering Point near the mouth of the Merri River on Wednesday might have been a blue whale.

Whale ecologist Peter Gill, from the Blue Whale Study, said blue whales were in south-eastern Australia from November until May.
Dr Gill said blue whales were rarely seen close to shore but sometimes did so if the krill they were chasing for food came near to land.
“They have been seen from the Warrnambool breakwater,” he said.
Dr Gill said blue whales were sighted south of Warrnambool in November last year.
