South-easterly winds pushed sand from the dunes onto the promenade, creating mini-dunes across the popular cycling and jogging path up to 30 centimetres high and a metre wide.
Warrnambool City Council sustainability co-ordinator Ian Fitzgibbon said the winds over the past two weeks had also affected the currents in the bay.R
“Residents may have noticed during December and January we had very little sand and seaweed movement in comparison to now,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“The shifting sand, seaweed and dunes are a natural part of our coastal environment.
“As long as the south-easterlies continue, we can expect to see sand and seaweed movement along the bay and promenade.”
The sand humps appeared along the entire length of the promenade and council workers were busily removing them yesterday. The council also organised a clean-up on the beach yesterday between the surf club and Worm Bay to remove seaweed in preparation for the warm weekend.
