Hampden Hotel publican Simon Myers has proposed the rodeo event take place possibly twice a year on a vacant lot at 53 Fergusson Street, to the rear of the hotel. Two objections were made in the public feedback period but council planning officers have recommended a permit be granted subject to conditions, including a traffic management plan, only two events per year and only on Saturday nights until 9pm.
The event would include amplified sound and lighting and attract between 500 and 700 spectators.
Late last year, The Standard reported Camperdown’s showgrounds had been considered as an alternative venue, but Mr Myers wanted to make the event more accessible in the centre of town.
“I have spoken to the local residents in the area and have gained full support for the event to go ahead,” he said. With support from Woodalls’ Rodeo Promotions, Mr Myers hoped to hold the first event at a cost of about $15,000 on March 23.
Several other agenda items at this week’s council meeting include:
n the allocation of the $10,000 Heritage Assistance Fund;
n proposals for the future use and development of the court house;
n councillor and mayoral allowances; and
n planning permit application for the use and development of land for a utility installation (terminal station) at the intersection of Lower Darlington Road and Smiths Road, and the creation/alteration of access arrangements to a road and associated works at the intersection of Camperdown-Lismore Road and Lower Darlington Road in Lismore.
